which way to Albequerque?

we had the surveyors come back and flag and pin all along the side property lines.

I got to play connect the dots and dice up some more cedars. hmmmm, maybe the driveway needs to be a bit more to the left. the upside is that we have many more nice oaks on the left side that we didn't realize was part of our land.

finding the boundaries

I met with a few fencing companies and got bids. the proptery lines get real confusing since it's not a perfect rectangle. I was afraid I might be working on or have plans for land that was not ours. in the end I got a better idea of the boundaries and have asked the survey company to come back and mark the sides. I'll run my own wire fence.

so I found that I needed to create a driveway to the smaller clearing. it's amazing what one guy and a $99 chainsaw can do. this was very dense and thick as what you see on both sides.

and I cleaned up several bags of trash. the neighbor had used this clearing to burn the trash. lots of semi-melted aluminum cans and glass.

and I've started to liberate some of the giant oaks. it will be some real cedar slaughtering to free the ones at the back of the property. this one is near the smaller clearing I've been cleaning.

open and shut

we now have a gate. yes, it's smaller than the openning. but it does a great job of holding the no trespassing sign.

I finished clearing the drive to the back of the ranch.

gave it a test drive and it worked great. you can see the truck has easily made it to the largest clearing.

rewarded all our effort with a snack break.

slaughter a few cedars, save some oaks

we've started clearing a driveway into our land in wimberley. we hope to be able to camp in there some weekend in the near future. the driveway cut below looks wide enough for our airstream. this was after removing about 40 cedars. we're working the drive around the many oaks.

below is looking into the drive from the street and my wife packing up some various ground trash that was desposited over the years, mostly beer and soda cans etc.

a neighbor was nice enough to invite us up on their second story deck to take in their views. we hope to have a similar view but our building site is probably 25 ft lower in elevation.

below is the view towards our property

we found a large clearing in the middle where I did some repairs to the chainsaw

we found the back property line! this was our third attempt to see the back. other attemps resulted in us turning back because it was just to thick or too long a hike. one attempt resulted in us coming back out near where we'd started. it's so thick in there we'd managed to do a big 180 when we'd thought we were walking in a straight line.

other highlights of our trek included a second but slightly smaller clearing and some GIGANTIC hundred year old oaks. we look fwd to liberating more oaks from the cedars that are growing up into them and depriving them of sun and sucking up their water.
